Ok so I’m not sure if you have caught this on the news this week but there has been a study by the University of Copenhagen that has found a link between the pill and depression.
Well big deal, it’s not like it isn’t listed as a possible side effect – oh you didn’t read the leaflet? Well it is there in black and white. Actually if i’m not mistaken it is quite a common side effect of all hormonal contraception.
So what’s so important about this study then? Well it’s pretty large including over a million Danish women between 15-34 years. It reported that of those taking the combined progesterone and oestrogen pill 23% more likely to be prescribed an antidepressant than those not on hormonal contraception. This rose to 34% for those using the progesterone only pill and for those girls between 15-19 on the combined pill this rose even further to 80%.
While the study doesn’t claim that the pill plays any role in the development in depression, it could just make it more likely. It’s also interesting to note that since the release of this study that many females have talked about their own experiences with the pill and either development or worsening of their mental health. Indeed it may just help some women figure out why their mental health is in disarray right now. On the flip side however there are also women who have said that the pill helped them overcome their depression.
So I guess it is just another case of it affecting everyone differently, although it does make you wonder just how much we really know about our ‘wonderful’ hormonal contraception.
What do you think about this? Have you got personal experiences of the pill and how it affected your mental health/mood etc differently to your friends?
